While Doctor Who fans embrace the latest 60th-anniversary trailer, some have noticed that UNIT’s new building has a striking resemblance to the MCU’s Avengers Tower. The David Tennant-led anniversary specials will see the show’s Earth-defending taskforce return, as Jemma Redgrave’s Kate Lethbridge Stewart continues to protect the globe from all manners of monsters. The military organization made their first appearance defending London from the Cybermen in Patrick Troughton’s 1968 adventure, “The Invasion,” and soon after, had recurring appearances in the classic show and the modern revival, facing Sontarans, Zygons, Daleks, and Autons.
Though Doctor Who‘s new 60th-anniversary trailer focused on returning foes and old friends reuniting, one new London landmark has caught some viewer’s attention. Check them out below:
Twitter user @camandfilm joked that the new trailer finally answered who had purchased the MCU’s Avengers Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The familiar design did leave commentators such as @drag_zilla excited about the specials.
Meanwhile, @GuyLambertUK pointed out that the organization has definitely received additional funding since they last appeared.
@DiscipleofBrad and @LivingAuthors stated that Stewart must have been the first buyer of the renovated Stark Industries HQ.
@TygerWhoCame2T pointed out how drastic the building’s relocation efforts must have been.
@TheCosairsWife also noted another Marvel connection the upcoming stories have.
Finally, @CreativeCatFX pointed out another sci-fi series the trailer has a resemblance to.
UNIT’s New Tower Isn’t The Doctor Who Mainstays Only Similarity To Marvel
Following the previous bases’ destruction in 2022’s “The Power of the Doctor,” UNIT’s all-new headquarters isn’t the only similarity the Doctor Who mainstay has to the MCU. Much like SHIELD, UNIT is an organization established to defend the Earth with soldiers clad in black uniforms and conduct scientific research, with the Doctor being employed as a scientific advisor. Furthermore, UNIT also possessed its own Helicarrier-esque vehicle with The Valiant until it was shot down by Daleks in “The Stolen Earth.”
Another way in which UNIT bears a resemblance to SHIELD is through its less-noble deeds. UNIT has a hidden stockpile of alien artifacts that the Doctor wouldn’t approve of and is willing to take any means necessary to complete its mission. Doctor Who: Flux‘s UNIT origin storyline also established that UNIT had been infiltrated by corrupt alien politician The Grand Serpent (Craig Robinson) in its earliest days in a plot to subjugate Earth, a plot comparable to the reveal of HYDRA controlling SHIELD all along.
While Doctor Who‘s new Disney connections may make UNIT’s Avengers Tower-esque base feel funnier in hindsight with a rumored UNIT spin-off potentially on the horizon, it is likely just a coincidence between the two designs. With UNIT being restored following the Thirteenth Doctor’s era and classic companion Mel’s (Bonnie Langford) season 12 return announcement featuring the landing pad in the background, the organization could play a larger role in future seasons. As such, fans can likely expect to see more of the organization and their familiar-looking building in the years to come.
