Season 3 of Crash Team Rumble will add Spyro the Dragon to its roster of playable PlayStation icons. While Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon have teamed up before, this will be the first platforming reunion between the two PlayStation mascots since the release of Skylanders: Imaginators in 2016.
Released earlier this year, Crash Team Rumble is an online 4v4 multiplayer platformer where players must use special abilities to collect Wumpa Fruit. The game features classic characters like Crash Bandicoot, Coco, and Neo Cortex, and the upcoming Season 3 will add yet another PlayStation legend to the game.
Just announced on the official Crash Bandicoot Twitter account, Season 3 of Crash Team Rumble will be bringing the beloved purple icon Spyro the Dragon into the multiplayer mayhem. Both Crash and Spyro are recognized by many as being the original mascots of PlayStation, and fans are already celebrating the exciting team-up between the two PS legends. Previously, the two characters were only playable together in Spyro Orange & Crash Bandicoot Purple, Skylanders: Imaginators, and as a limited-time event in the Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Grand Prix: Spyro N. Friends. There have been numerous crossovers between the two franchises, mostly in the form of playable game demos, character appearances in backgrounds or cutscenes, and in hidden Easter eggs, but the addition of Spyro the Dragon in Season 3 of Crash Team Rumble marks the first official reunion between the two in several years.
Fans have already begun celebrating the icons’ upcoming team-up in Rumble, with many also making keen observations on the official Season 3 artwork. While Spyro is prominently featured alongside Crash, players also noted the presence of Elora, a leading faun character from Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage. Ripto, the titular villain of the original Spyro sequel, was previously added to Crash Team Rumble in Season 2 and can also be spotted in the announcement graphic. Long-time Spyro fans also pointed out the inclusion of Sparx, Spyro’s dragonfly companion, and the addition of the collectible gems from the Spyro the Dragon franchise.
Many gaming companies have recognizable mascots, and Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon helped to define and popularize the PlayStation console in the 1990s. Just like Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic, Crash and Spyro are popular across generations and platforms, and Crash Team Rumble will have fun new content to offer fans when Season 3 launches on December 7.
