A Mortal Kombat 1 fan is currently working on a mod that will allow Kameo-exclusive fighters like Jax, Sonya, Sareena, and Stryker to be playable. This Mortal Kombat 1 modder recently shared with the community an intriguing proof of concept showcasing how the Kameo characters look in their upcoming mod.
Mortal Kombat 1 marked the 12th mainline entry in Warner Bros’ iconic franchise. The game introduced a novel concept—Kameo Fighters. These fighters, while not part of the roster of playable characters, add a unique layer to the gameplay. Kameos join players in battle, providing assistance and expanding the move set variety alongside the main character.
The modder, called ermaccer, focused their endeavor on allowing the swapping of character definitions in order to turn Kameo Fighters into playable characters. The proof of concept shared by the modder showcased early Kameo-exclusive characters, such as Jax, Sonya, Sareena, and Stryker, all becoming playable. Ermaccer also outlined some limitations to the mod, emphasizing that new Kameo Fighters would have to utilize move sets from official Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo fighters, including specials, X-rays, and fatalities. However, the modder expressed an intent to refine and complete this feature after an upcoming update that will add Tremor as a Kameo character, ensuring a more seamless and comprehensive modding experience.
Proof of Concept for Playing as Kameos
In response to player inquiries, ermaccer clarified that players can perform brutalities on Kameo Fighters, but the outcome will likely duplicate, following the standard behavior in Mortal Kombat games when dismemberment data is absent. Additionally, in response to the absence of certain Mortal Kombat 1 kombatants as Kameos, the modder addressed the possibility of playing as Motaro, explaining that while it’s technically feasible, Motaro’s unique animations for Kameo moves might not look accurate due to the distinct characteristics of his design.
“MK1Hook” is the name of the plugin for the PC version of Mortal Kombat 1, where the Kameo mod will take place. Among other changes, the plugin introduces a 60 FPS Patch and Character Modifier that allows players to play as NPCs. While Mortal Kombat 1 introduces Kameo Fighters to expand the combat depth, this mod enhances the experience by granting players control over these classic characters.
Understanding Mortal Kombat 1‘s Kameos system is not an easy task and becomes paramount for online players, as it introduces multiple options to surprise the rival. However, it comes with a complexity that needs to be learned in order to succeed in a fight. Ermaccer’s initiative proves the modding community’s dedication to enriching the gaming experience and brings an exciting twist for Mortal Kombat 1 fans.
The 12th mainline entry in Warner Bros’ franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 is set to be a soft reboot. Along with staples like a single-player campaign and online multiplayer, the 2023 game will also introduce Kameo Fighters.
