- The highly-anticipated sequel will introduce Johnny Cage as an iconic fighter and tease the debut of the Netherrealm, an essential location in the game’s lore.
- Properly introducing the Netherrealm in Mortal Kombat 2 would explain Scorpion’s return and allow him to come back yet again, as well as bring back other dead characters from the game series.
Mortal Kombat 2 has teased the debut of an iconic location from the games, with this possibly fixing the 2021 reboot’s fatal Scorpion mistake. While the 2021 Mortal Kombat film was relatively well-received compared to previous Mortal Kombat movies as well as video game adaptations as a whole, it did receive some criticism for changing some of the game’s lore. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set to fix some of these lore changes, repairing the damage that was done to Scorpion’s character in the first film.
Mortal Kombat 2 is closer than ever, with the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2021 reboot expanding the big-screen world of Mortal Kombat even further. One of the biggest additions to the film is the debut of Johnny Cage, the iconic fighter that will be played by The Boys‘ Karl Urban in the film. However, Johnny Cage won’t be the only addition to the sequel, as Mortal Kombat 2 producer Todd Garner has teased a location that is essential to the lore of the games.
Mortal Kombat 2 Is Teasing Netherrealm (After The First Movie Skipped It)
Although many details regarding Mortal Kombat 2 are still being kept tightly under wraps, some details are starting to slip, including the latest tease from producer Todd Garner. In late November, Garner posted an image of a mysterious rocky terrain that is illuminated red, although not much context is given. However, due to the visuals of the location, some fans of Mortal Kombat think that this is a pretty clear tease of the Netherrealm.
The Netherrealm is essentially the Underworld of the Mortal Kombat universe, with dead souls being sent there to be tortured for eternity. This includes many of the fighters in the Mortal Kombat games, as fights often end with them being brutally killed. The Netherrealm is never seen in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, but due to its importance to the lore, it may finally be appearing in Mortal Kombat 2.
Netherrealm In Mortal Kombat 2 Would Mean More Scorpion
Hanzo Hasashi, later known as Scorpion, is killed in the beginning of Mortal Kombat 2021, but that isn’t the last time that he is seen. Later in the film, Cole Young resurrects Hanzo as Scorpion, with the duo working together to fight Sub-Zero. Although it isn’t fully explained in the film, Scorpion is able to return due to him being held in the Netherrealm after his death, which is where he presumably returns once again at the end of the film.
Properly introducing Netherrealm in Mortal Kombat 2 would be a great choice, as it would finally explain Scorpion’s return to viewers not familiar with the lore of the game. However, it would also allow Scorpion to come back once again, meaning that he can be seen even more in the sequel. The Netherrealm would also allow plenty of other dead characters to return for Mortal Kombat 2, with this being one of the most charming aspects of the video game series.
